A female suspect may be searched only by another woman, and with strict regard to decency. A male officer patting you down at a roadside stop is not carrying out a lawful search — he is committing one more offence on top of whatever he stopped you for.

The privacy of citizens, their homes, correspondence and telephone conversations is guaranteed and protected. There is no general power to compel you to unlock your device at a checkpoint. If they insist, note the time, the location and any badge or plate number you can read — that record is the thing that survives.

You are entitled to be informed, in a language you understand, of the reason for your arrest. You have the right to remain silent until you have consulted a lawyer of your own choice. Section 34 separately guarantees your dignity: no torture, no inhuman or degrading treatment, in a cell or anywhere else.

Bail for a bailable offence is granted free of charge. Any officer who demands payment, a 'file fee', or 'something for the boys' is extorting you, and the Police Complaint Response Unit exists to take that report.

The VAPP Act criminalises rape without a marital exemption, and makes spousal battery a distinct offence. It also covers emotional, verbal, psychological and economic abuse, and allows a court to issue a protection order. It applies in the FCT and in every state that has domesticated it — most now have.
